I contacted New Balance to get a recommendation regarding the correct size to order, I normally take 8.5b, but my New Balance walkabout shoes are 9c/d. I bought the 9m, as advised, and they are a perfect fit [with socks as I usually do with boots] and the arch support is just right. My feet and normally a medium width and when I opened the box up the boots looked to be too narrow for me, a clever illusion by the designer as they are not tight and are very comfortable. They remind me a bit of some much loved military-disposal-store nurse's boots from the 50s which looked great but always pinched. The zipper at back is excellent as the lacing only needs to be adjusted once.

The boot was nice looking but too narrow. It did not fit well on my foot, most uncomfortable. Someone with a narrow foot would probably do well with this boot.
