After several attempts at finding the perfect Frye boots, the search is over. There are tons of reviews on the web for these boots and it seems as though everyone has a different experience. I am always a 7 in everything but athletic shoes in which I prefer a 6.5. Much to my surprise, I took a 6.5 in the 12R. They are a bit difficult to get on, but I found that standing up and stepping down into the boot as opposed to trying to pull it on is very helpful. The Charcoal Old Town is a darker grey in person than it is on any website I've viewed this boot on. It's a very dark smokey grey and the toe cap is darker than the rest of the boot, but not as markedly so as in the pictures. One thing Amazon has incorrect in the description is the shaft height. These boots have a 9 inch shaft height, not 12. Not only am I able to measure my own pair, but you can go to the Frye site and they list the shaft height at 9 inches.

The first pair I ordered fit VERY weird. It's a common problem I have read about with people having trouble getting their foot in the boot. I have never once encountered this issue, even with the 15Rs I tried on. One quick exchange later and I had my Plum Brush off engineer boots in my hot little hands! I had admired these from afar, but made due with my black 8R, smoke 12R, and black 12R shearlings. All of these aside, I am so VERY glad I decided to take the plunge and get these. The Black finish is very plain, very straight forward, and almost look like rubber boots sometimes. The smoke finish looks like the boots have been around for ages and are quite beautiful. These are beautiful in an entirely different way. The leather has a beautiful sheen to it, and though the leather is thinner, there is no lack in quality. These truly look like DRESS boots, whereas the others I own appear much more casual. The price I got these for is was nearly 20% off the retail price, which is nearly unbeatable by every other retailer at this time.
Per usual, there is a break in period, though due to the thinner leather, these took significantly less time. The interior is not lined, like my other engineers. Initially this was off putting with my first pair, but I have begin to quite like this. It minimalizes the foot moving around in a boot that doesn't entirely conform to the foot. Only once have I had an issue with blistering during breaking in my 8Rs, though my foot might also just be used to this style by now.
Take the chance, get them. If you happen to get a pair where you can't get your foot in, try exchanging them for a second pair. I promise you won't regret it!I think these boots look very kick-ass, and have been wanting a pair for years. However, in the flesh I found the height of the boot unflattering. They would be fine under jeans but in that case why get these instead of a lower rise pair (the 8R).They are also very tight through the instep, which made them difficult to pull on and uncomfortable when I finally was able to. Ended up sending them back. I did like the color though.
