I bought the 8r in black and the 12r in gaucho. I figured I'd try them both and send back the size/color I didn't want. The only problem was that my 12r's were fulfilled by amazon and shipped via prime, so I got them much earlier. I tried them on with different outfits and tried to wait for the 8r's that were coming from another seller. Well, when I couldn't wait any longer I wore them out and realized this meant I was keeping my 12r's. When the 8r's came I knew I'd have to send them back ($$$, right?), but they were soo great.

So, long story short, I have 12r's in gaucho and 8r's in black and I LOVE THEM BOTH! They are different enough, I think. I wear them with everything and they're super comfy. The 8r's are so short that you will see some wrinkle from even the skinniest of jeans above the boot. However, I even wear boyfriends and straight jeans w/ the 8's because they're short enough to pull off a loose/sloppy tuck-in. The 12's cover more jean, so the look is cleaner, but I can only tuck in skinny jeans or leggings or it looks silly. I can't tell you which is betterI love them both. If I did it over I think I'd buy frye harness 12r's in brown and engineer 8's in black just so they would be more different. However, I am not unhappy with having 2 pair of engineers because they are super awesome. I kind of want some more boots now...

These boots are absolutely gorgeous. The two-tone effect is perfect and almost make these dark boots look like old-fashioned burgundy or ox-blood colored boots. I've got three pair of Frye boots and they all fit the same. They are tough to pull on if you have a high instep like me but worth the effort!!!! Once your feet are in the shoes, they mold to your feet and feel custom made after several wearings. I need a lot of room in the toe area and these boots give me the comfort I need. I wear them walking my dogs, riding my Harley, or just working around the house. I wore them all day on the day I received them. What more can you ask for? Frye is expensive but you'll have them for life with minimal care. I've got one pair for 25 years!

I love my new boots. I've had them about a week and, after some in-home breaking in of the boots, have found a way to wear them about every day.

I was completely torn about what size to buy. I have a wide toe box area, but not wide feet or wide ankles. I have a hugely high instep. I hate things that are clunky and too big, but I want to be able to wear the boots. I'm a 7.0 in most shoes, and a 7.5 in my other Frye boots and cowboy boots. I settled on a 7.5. When I first got them, I was worried that I actually needed an 8. The instep was crazy tight for me (as reviewers have mentioned), but the toes also felt tight. Ultimately, I think the 7.5 was the right choice for the thickness of socks I wear (medium), but only with a complicated breaking-in process. An 8 probably wouldn't have been too big, but I'm glad I stayed with the 7.5 now that they're loosening up.

My last Frye boots (Maxine shorties) didn't require much break-in and certainly no stretching (nor did either pair of my non-Frye cowboy boots). The leather is a lot softer, though on all of them. These did require breaking in, for sure, at least for me. I did a lot of wearing them with big socks until they warmed up (one of my feet actually fell asleep this way), conditioning them with good boot conditioner, stuffing them crazy with packing paper until they bowed, then leaving them overnight. I repeated this for a couple days. Amazingly enough, after the second night, they fit great. My toes are comfortable in them, they don't slip up and down too much in the heel, and the leather is softening up nicely. They're still hard to step into, but they should be (that's what keeps your foot back in the boot properly). They still don't feel totally broken-in. I think it'll probably take some more wearing and conditioning for this to happen, but I haven't had a single blister, and I wore them for an 8+ hour shift on my feet. Another couple of weeks, and I bet they'll be perfect.

They look much less "clunky" than I thought they would, even with the substantial heel. They're a more slender boot than they appeared from the pictures, but I like that. They're comfortable (now). They look okay at work under boot-cut work pants (strangely enough). They're awesome with skinny jeans tucked in. I'm really happy with my purchase.

I had been going back and forth on buying these for awhile, so happy I did! The boots are made very well and I know they will last forever. Like others have mentioned the fit could be a little snug across the top of your foot but this is normal for this type of boot. Standing up to put them on is also helpful, as is not wearing white socks the new black leather sort of stains them. My only complaint is that I broke them in wearing a dress (and bare legs) and the stiffness of the top actually bruised the backs of my legs! Lol! These boots also work well under jeans and are super comfortable. Totally get the Frye "cult" following now! I'm guessing this will be the first of a new collection!
